Exercise Recommendations

Qi, the vital energy of the body, gets stagnated if you are physically inactive. In TCM, the stagnant Qi is the primary cause of hundreds of illnesses, from muscle aches to stroke. Regular and proper exercise can help prevent Qi stagnation, helping the body to maintain physical and mental vitality.

There are many forms of exercise that you can do, but it is important to choose ones that you can enjoy doing regularly and get the most benefit from. For some people, slow paced activities are most suitable, while others thrive on strenuous, high-energy workouts. If you have physical limitations such as tight muscles, torn ligaments, or weak bones, it is very important to consult with your health care practitioner prior to beginning any new exercise programs in order to avoid unnecessary injury.

At New Orleans Acupuncture Wellness Center, we introduce simple and easy exercises suitable for most patients, even with physical limitations. According to their conditions, different stretching, movements, and breathing techniques will be introduced to individual patients.

Egoscue Method

Egoscue Method

Developed by Pete Egoscue, the Egoscue method involves a series of stretches that are uniquely designed for a particular dysfunctional, postural alignment pattern. It focuses on establishing better postural alignment, not only during standing, but for sitting and functioning as a whole. The Egoscue method is not a hand-on therapy; instead, it is a self-adjusting therapy.

At New Orleans Acupuncture Wellness Center, our practitioners will teach easy and gentle stretching with some quick muscle isolation appropriate for individual patients’ conditions. With 15-20 minutes of self stretching and strengthening exercises every day, you can have better posture, better mobility, better balance, and dramatically decreased body aches and pain.

Qi Gong

Qi Gong is an ancient Chinese health care system for maintaining health, healing disorders, and increasing vitality. Qi means the life force or the vital energy that flows through the body and all things in the universe. Gong means accomplishment or skill that is cultivated through steady practice. Together, Qi Gong means cultivating energy.

Qi Gong

Qi Gong is a combination of physical movement, breathing techniques, visualization, and meditation. The slow, gentle, and rhythmic movements of Qi Gong with coordinated breathing techniques reduce stress, build stamina, increase vitality, and enhance the immune system. It improves cardiovascular, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic and digestive functions. Western scientific research confirms that Qi Gong reduces hypertension and the incidence of falling in the aged population.

Qi Gong also creates an awareness of our being. When mindful breathing techniques are added to physical movements, the body, mind, and spirit can be harmonized, and the benefits of exercise increase exponentially.

At New Orleans Acupuncture Wellness Center, we focus regulating the entire body into a calm, relaxed, and natural state through small movements, meditation, and breathing techniques of Qi Gong.

Yoga / Pilates

Yoga

Along with meditation, Yoga is one of the most popular alternatives of healing therapy. Yoga aims for the integrity of the body, mind, and spirit through a system of postures, breathing exercises, meditation. On the physical level, yoga poses are designed to tone, reinforce, and align the body, to make the spine flexible and healthy, and to promote the blood flow to all part of the body. On the mental level, breathing techniques and meditation are used to calm, illuminate, and control the mind.

Pilates is a physical fitness system designed to use the mind to control the muscles. Pilates is a body conditioning routine that helps to not only build flexibility but also strength, endurance, and coordination.

While acupuncture treats specific diseases and disharmonies by unblocking stagnation in the organs and meridians, Yoga and Pilates are general exercises that prevent disease by keeping the meridians open and letting Qi flows freely. Along with Egoscue method and Qi Gong, Yoga and Pilates can be used as self-treatment for your body, mind and spirit.

New Orleans Acupuncture Wellness Center has a partnership with Heartsong Pilates & Yoga Studio in Mandeville.
